Scotland international goalkeeper Allan McGregor has opted to return to his former club Rangers, after struggling to reach agreement on a new deal at Hull City.

The 36-year-old will be returning to Ibrox, where he spent more than a decade, on a two-year deal having left the club in 2012 for Turkish league outfit Besiktas.

McGregor has 38 caps at international level, spent only one year at Besiktas before moving back to Britain to join Sky Bet Championship side, Hull.

The shotstopper picked up the Hull City's player of the year accolade this season, but turned down an offer to remain at the club in favour of returning to Rangers.

The move coincides with the Glasgow side's appointment of ex-England star Steven Gerrard as manager, and McGregor is Gerrard's second signing in charge.

The former Liverpool midfielder told the club website: ''He is a vastly experienced goalkeeper who we feel can add to the options available to us currently.''

''He has won lots of silverware for this club, and has shone at the highest level in Europe. I have played against Allan a number of times in my own career and I know just how fierce a competitor he can be.''

For his part, McGregor said: ''I can't keep the smile off my face. When the chance came, it was an absolute no-brainer. I started training here when I was 12-years-old and it's incredible to be back.''

''We need to make this place [Ibrox] a fortress where nobody wants to come, we need to win games, no matter who you are playing. If you keep doing that, that's what wins you titles.''
