Manchester City made a slow start to the game with Schalke, but a penalty given away by Jeffrey Bruma started a glut of goals for the English side. Aguero converted it, before scoring again four minutes later with a goal that had to be reviewed by VAR. Shortly afterwards, Leroy Sane hit the sucker punch to down his old team.

The first goal came from a penalty, as Jeffrey Bruma brought down David Silva in the area as the pair both went for an Ilkay Gundogan cross. The Schalke man was given a yellow card for his troubles, before Sergio Aguero hit a panenka penalty straight down the middle.

Leroy Sane made it three just before the break when he was slipped in on goal before finishing coolly. The three goals left Schalke with a mountain to climb in the second half.
