Alvarez out, but Atletico 'still a test' for Liverpool, says Van Dijk

The Argentine forward will sit out the clash with a knee injury sustained in Atletico's most recent league match. Speaking ahead of the game, Van Dijk acknowledged the impact of Alvarez's absence but stressed the quality that remains in Diego Simeone's squad.

"Julian is a fantastic player, so it's a blow for them, but Atletico are still a very dangerous team with top players and an outstanding coach. Tomorrow we'll need to be at our best. We're ready for anything," the Dutch centre-back said.

Van Dijk also recalled Liverpool's painful elimination at the hands of Atletico in the 2020 Champions League, one of the final matches before the COVID-19 pandemic halted football.

"That was a very tough exit. Atletico are relentless—they work extremely hard, with a manager who is one of the best in the world. They have quality players across the pitch and one of the top goalkeepers in football. They never give up. Maybe their league start hasn't been perfect, but they'll give everything here," he added.

Liverpool, who have won all four of their Premier League matches so far, now turn their focus to Europe. After a disappointing round of 16 exit last season, they are determined to make a stronger impression in this year's competition.

"When I renewed my contract, my aim was to win every competition we enter, but you face many great teams. I'm confident we have a fantastic squad and can show that in Europe, but we have to work for it. Tomorrow is a big opportunity, and expectations are high," he concluded.
