Germany took the lead in the first half through Selke's header, before Gray levelled things from a corner. England took the lead early in the second half through Abraham's close-range finish but they were pegged back by Germany as Platte powered a header home from a corner. In the shootout, Redmond's all important final penalty was saved by Pollersbeck. Gerhardt and Abraham also missed for Germany and England respectively.
Germany are through to the U21 European Championship final
They will know their opponents in a couple of hours' time.
REDMOND MISSES - GERMANY WIN 4-3 ON PENALTIES
Not a good penalty, Pollersbeck dives to his right and keeps it out.
AMIRI SCORES 4-3
Pickfrod gets something on it down to his right but can't keep it out.
WARD-PROWSE SCORES 3-3
Great pen, he sends the keeper the wrong way and puts it in the top corner.
MEYER SCORES 3-2
He sends Pickford to his left and shoots to his right.
CHILWELL SCORES 2-2
He sends the keeper the wrong way, good pen.
PHILIPP SCORES 2-1
Pickford goes the right way but it's a good pen
ABRAHAM MISSES 1-1
Tame, tame, tame. Pollersbeck saves down to his right.
GERHARDT MISSES 1-1
Saved low to his right by Pickford
BAKER SCORES 1-1
He sends Pollersbeck the wrong way
ARNOLD SCORES 1-0
Straight down the middle
Germany will go first
England have apparently been taking penalties every day in training...
So who will be the hero?
And who will be Gareth Southgate or David Batty?
2-2 AET
Germany took the lead in the first half through Selke's header, before Gray levelled things from a corner. England took the lead early in the second half through Abraham's close-range finish but they were pegged back by Germany as Platte powered a header home from a corner.
Penalties it is
Spoiler alert: Germany win this.
FT: England 2-2 Germany AET
Amiri hits it
But the wall stands up well
Free kick Germany
Great position this, but on second viewing it is a horrible dive...
So close.... twice!
This is some ball in from Chilwell, he dinks it in behind with the outside of his left foot but Abraham is inches away from beating Pollersbeck to the ball. At the other end Toljan slips the ball through the legs of Chilwell and drives the ball across goal but with the goal gaping and no-one anywhere near him Amiri can't make contact with the ball.
Yellow for Arnold
He wasn't happy with a couple of decisions and let the referee know and is rightly booked.
A good stat for you all
Germany have had 37 shots so far, but only scored twice. Unlucky or wasteful? You decide.
Chance for Chambo!
Pollersbeck must be bored, that's the only thing that can explain him coming for this. A free kick comes in from deep and he comes about 15 yards to try and claim it. He gets nowhere near it and Chambers wins the header but he loops it wide.
Surely a card! Yes!
Kempf is booked for slapping the ball away as Iorfa tried to break.
Chance for England
Yes, really! Iorfa puts a ball in from the right and Swift gets up highest but can only head wide.
We're back underway
England make their 4th change
Iorfa comes on for Holgate. Not sure that will solve England's problems though.
Just a thought
Does Max Arnold remind anyone else of Sherman from American Pie?
Half-time in extra-time
England 2-2 Germany
1 minute of added time in extra-time
Chance Germany
A corner is cleared as far as the edge of the box where Gerhardt meets it, he strikes it low and hard but Pickford saves. England go down the other end but shoot well wide
Have a shot next time
The ball breaks to Philipp on the edge but he leans back and balloons it into row Z.
A slight lull
Platte heads a corner from Arnold well wide before Chilwell looks to break, he carries the ball about 30 yards before being brought down, no foul. The left-back is furious, he needs to be careful, he has already been booked.
Here it is
Kohr comes on for Haberer
Germany are readying their 4th change
No I can't get used to that either.
"On the Scholes"
Max Arnold fancies his chances "on the Scholes" but it goes high and wide. I love that he's tried it though.
England are dead on their feet here
Germany look faster, stronger and more sprightly so far.
Nearly!
Abraham closes down a back-pass but Pollersbeck just beats him there
Another Germany effort
Amiri fires in low from the edge of the box but it is straight at Pickford.
Close Germany
Amiri gets to the byline after a nice back-heel from Gerhardt, he drives the ball across the face of goal but noone is there to convert or indeed clear.
We're back underway
Pickford has already been called into action to punch away a cross before Arnold fires harmlessly over.
FT: England 2-2 Germany
Extra-time it is! Both sides will get another substitution and we'll play another 30 minutes here.
One last effort
Arnold fires wide from range
And again
Germany attack and another free header is blocked before it gets to Pickford
Chance Germany
A corner comes in from the right and it's a free header at the back post but it goes wide. What a chance.
5 minutes added on here
Can either team find a winner?
Germany substitution
Gnabry off, Amiri on
England substitution
Hughes, who was cramping up not too long ago is withdrawn and replaced by Reading's John Swift
England go close
Go play from Abraham to hold the ball up, he finds Redmond who does what he does best and cuts in to shoot but his effort is just wide of the near post.
Holgate is booked
He clashed with Gerhardt as they went up for a header
Close Germany
Gnabry takes aim from 20 yards and his shot is just wide of Pickford's right-hand post.
Yellow card
Gnaby is booked for pulling back Murphy
England attack
England have the ball, do not adjust your sets.
Germany substitution
Jung off, Kehrer on
Hughes looks to have a knock
Scratch that, it's just cramp.
NO GOAL
Germany thought that had taken the lead as Meyer's ball from the right was headed home by Platte but it is ruled out for offside. Very tight but it looks like a great call from the linesman.
Germany dominating
Arnold tries his luck from 30 yards this time but his effort is always going wide. England have to change something here or they are going to lose here, it is that simple.
Strong from Redmond
He prevents Gnaby from getting a cross in and wins a goal kick.
Good strike
Philipp takes aim from 25 yards and catches it very well, Pickford manages to palm it behind.
Not in there!
England get cuaght trying to play out and almost pay the price. The ball comes to Gnabry unmarked at the far post but Pickford comes out to smother.
England substitution
Redmond comes on for Gray
Chance Germany
Philipp fires just wide from eight yards
There only looks like one winner here at the moment
Will England regret dropping back after taking the lead
GOAL GERMANY 2-2
Platte gets it. He meets Arnold's outswinging corner with a firm header at the near post and the ball flies past Pickford. All square again.
England mount a rare attack
A nice first time ball from Holgate finds Murphy but he tries to do too much and overruns the ball.
Better from Gray
Toljan looks to get to the byline but the winger tracks him all the way and makes the challenge, good unselfish play from the Leicester City man.
Good defending from Holgate
He uses his body well to stop Gnabry getting in behind.
England make a change of their own
Chalobah looks to be struggling, Norwich's Jacob Murphy replaces him.
Germany continue to attack
Gnabry gets to the byline but his cross is just about put behind by an England defender.
Germany make a change
Selke can't continue and is replaced by Platte
Selke could be in here
He gone off for some treatmant after landing awkwardly challenging Mawson for a header.
Chilwell goes into the book
Silly stuff from the Leicester man, he feels aggreived to not be awarded a free kick so brings down Philipp with no attempt to get the ball. Not a bad position this for Germany.
Chance Germany
Toljan meets Arnolds cross at the far post after it evades the clearances of two England players but he can only scuff the ball wide. Looks like he may have seen it late.
England's defence looks ready for an onslaught
Calum Chambers gets in a couple of blocks and Alfie Mawson attacks a ball with gusto. I get the feeling Mawson would head a brick for his country, he's one of those.
Good reaction from Germany
They haven't gone into their shell at all and are continuing to attack in the same vein.
GOAL ENGLAND 2-1
Abraham fires home first time after good work from Hughes. Watford's new signing picks up a loose ball and gets to the byline and his pullback finds Abraham six yards out. He makes no mistake.
Corner England
Gray's effort is deflected behind. But the set piece is cleared.
Germany pressing early in this second half
Their pressure subsides slightly as Gerhardt get his shot all wrong
Germany win an early corner
It isn't dealy with convincingly and Meyer ends up getting a shot away but Pickford catches it with ease.
We're back underway
Courtesy of James Ward-Prowse. Both sides are unchanged.
The teams are back out
Aidy Boothroyd has given a few good team-talks this tournament, does he have another one up his sleeve today?
A few observations
Max Arnold in midfield for Germany looks a class above. Most of Germany's threat is coming down their right-hand side through Toljan's overlapping runs, if England can get a grip on that they may be better placed to get a result here. England meanwhile look very dangerous from set pieces and they will no doubt be looking to exploit that in the second half. Demarai Gray is their biggest threat from open play, contstantly looking to get in behind but also not afraid of taking the ball in tight areas.
HT: England 1-1 Germany
Germany took the lead through Selke's header but were pegged back after Gray struck from a corner.
1 minute added on here
Abraham goes down
He wants a penalty after he is brought down as the ball comes into the box but the referee says no
Chance England
A great diagonal through ball from Hughes finds Gray bursting though, his touch lets him down though and Pollersbeck can gather. Close.
England playing very deep
Abraham looks very isolated out of possession for England.
Very good finish that
It came at Gray quickly on the volley on his weak foot but he struck it well pass the outstretched hand of Pollersbeck. Game on.
GOAL ENGLAND 1-1
Gray fires home from a corner after Chambers is denied twice.
Germany looking very dangerous down the flanks
All Germany's best stuff is coming down their right-hand side, England need to be careful here. They've really faded after that good start.
Germany smell blood
They pile forward again, Selke turns provider this time but Gnaby's effort from his cut back is blocked and the rebound flies over the bar
Poor marking from England there
How does a 6'3" and a bit striker end up unmarked eight yards out?
GOAL GERMANY 1-0
Selke is left unmarked eight yards out to guide a header past Pickford after Toljan picked him out with the cross.
Great chance Germany
Philipp cuts insde Chilwell and has the whole goal to aim at with his left foot but he fires high and wide. Waste.
Set pieces could be key today
The delivery from Ward-Prowse and Arnold has been immaculate so far
Chance Germany
Toljan cuts in from the right and takes aim, the shot is deflected and Pickford can only force it behind
Germany just shading possession
54%/46% in their favour
England go forward
Mawson carries the ball out of defence and finds Gray on the right, his cross is cleared but Chalobah is there with a good tackle to stop Arnold from starting a counter attack
Chance Germany
Arnold swings in a corner Philipp gets a flick at the near post and as Haberer tries to budle it in at the far bost he goes down in a heap under the challenge of Will Hughes. The referee points for a goal kick.
Chance Germany
Toljan does very well to bring this ball down 30 yards out, when noone comes to close him down he decided to have a go but it never looks like troubling Pickford
Chilwell looking good here
Not afraid to go forward, he intercepts the ball in his own half and carries the ball fully 40 yards, good full-back play
Chance Germany
Hughes pulls out of a challenge down the right and Germany are away, Philipp crosses from the edge of the box and finds Selke around the penalty spot but his effort is saved by Pickford.
Yellow Card
Selke goes into the book this time
Chance England
Another pin-point ball from Ward-Prowse from a free kick on the right finds Abraham but his header from 12 yards is beaten out by Pollersbeck and Mawson fired the follow up wide.
Chance Germany
And what a chance, a great ball in from Arnold finds Gnaby 12 yards out, Pickford has half come and is stranded by Gnaby heads wide. Great chance that.
England having all the chances early on here
I don't know what Aidy Boothroyd said pre-match but it is certainly working
Worth a try
Ward-Prwose tries his luck on the turn from 25 yards but his shot skids just wide
Good recovery from Chambers
Selke almost gets in behind after some indecision but Chambers gets back well to clear
Germany trying to slow the game down
After that rather incredible start to the game the Germans are trying to put their foot on the ball
Yellow card
Will Hughes goes into the book for a challenge from behind on Haberer
Quite the tempo to this one so far
Great chance, great save
Hughes plays in Gray who goes through, he is denied by a fantastic block but the ball falls back to him. He shoots again but is denied by a great one-handed save from Pollersbeck and as the ball drops Hughes is brought down by Jung but the referee is unmoved. Phew. Looked like a foul that.
Great chance England
Ward-Prowse puts in a fantastic corner, Chalobah is on his own 6 yards out but heads over. Got. To. Score.
Chance England
Good feet from Huges on the right as he gets to the byline and pulls the ball back but it is deflected behind with Abraham waiting and the goal gaping. Ward-Prowse's corner is then header over. Exciting start to the game here!
Penalty? No
I've seen them given, Selke goes down under Chambers' challenge as he looks to run in behind but the referee says no. Nervy start for the England back line.
