David De Gea's move to Real Madrid from Manchester United has fallen through.
Reports suggested that Madrid and United initiated talks on Monday with the hope of striking a deal for the Spaniard, but it has now emerged that the required documents did not arrive at the headquarters of La Liga on time, thus scuppering the switch.
De Gea, 24, has not featured for United since pre-season, missing all six Premier League and Champions League play-off games after Louis van Gaal became concerned that interest from Los Blancos had unsettled the keeper.
United appeared to have finally caved to De Gea's sale on the final day of the Spanish transfer window, with Keylor Navas set to join the Red Devils in a part-exchange, along with a fee of £29 million.
Unlike the Premier League, La Liga are unlikely to grant either club an extension past the deadline to complete their business.
However Manchester United and Real Madrid will attempt to revive David de Gea's move to the Bernabeu today.
BeSoccer understands United insist they registered the necessary documents on Fifa's transfer matching system in time for the deal to go through.
Both clubs are desperate to complete the transfer, and Goal understands they will make presentations to Fifa and the LFP on Tuesday.
De Gea had been expected to make his long-awaited move to Madrid on Monday before the late confusion on deadline day in Spain.
The Spain international has sat out United's opening fixtures of the new season, while Louis van Gaal has moved to sign Sergio Romero and make the 28-year-old his No.1 goalkeeper.
