Would a Ballon d'Or for Modric make up for past injustices?

A Ballon d'Or to right the injustices felt by Pirlo and Iniesta. That is what 'La Gazzetta dello Sport' said as they campaigned for Luka Modric to win the most prestigious individual award in football this year.
With Messi and Ronaldo having been sent home from the World Cup already after having mediocre tournaments, attention turns to other players who are still at the tournament. One of them is Luka Modric, who has had an excellent competition so far.
The Croatian is one of his country's most important players, even though he missed a penalty right at the end of their last-16 game that meant that they had to get to the qaurter-finals through a penalty shootout.
His native country has obviously joined the claims for him to be the firsrt Croat to win the Ballon d'Or, with 'Sportske Novostre' printing the headline 'Right the injustices of footballing history!'
However, it has certainly not been one of Modric's best seasons, even though he reached the height of winning his third-consecutive Champions League in Kiev.
