Sevilla wrap up a turbulent season with key decisions unresolved

After narrowly securing La Liga survival and suffering a final-day defeat at Villarreal, Sevilla face one last appointment on their calendar. The Andalusian side will take on Wydad Casablanca, who are gearing up for the upcoming Club World Cup.
The match will be played at the Mohamed V Stadium in Morocco, bringing the curtain down on what has been a challenging season.
However, the work in the offices at Nervion cannot stop—especially after one of the club's worst seasons in modern times, with several similar years preceding it. According to El Desmarque Sevilla, there is a sense of gridlock at the Pizjuan as no decision has been made on the future of the sporting department.
Victor Orta has been working on plans for next season, with some deals already lined up, such as the signing of Alfon Gonzalez on a free transfer from Celta.
Yet these decisions are not being actioned, as neither the sporting director nor his staff know whether they will be staying at the club. The board has yet to make a final call.
Earlier this month, Diario de Sevilla reported that Sergio Fernandez, currently at Alaves, was among the leading candidates to replace Orta. At the time, it seemed almost certain that Orta would depart, but with June fast approaching, there has been no update on who will be tasked with shaping Sevilla's 2025/26 squad.
A crucial decision awaiting whoever takes on that responsibility—whether Orta or his replacement—will be appointing a new head coach to lead the team forward following Joaquin Caparros' interim stint.
The ideal candidate would spearhead a new, coherent project that suits the squad's needs. Orta's list reportedly included Imanol, but with the former Real Sociedad boss in high demand and no decision-makers in place at Sevilla, this option looks increasingly unlikely.
Meanwhile, contract renewals for Suso and Garcia Pascual also remain unresolved. A great deal of work lies ahead, but for now, everything remains on hold.
