After Barcelona's draw at Sevilla and Real Madrid's controversial win in San Sebastian, the league is very exciting at the top. It has not been so tight since the 2009-10 campaign. At this stage of the competition, matchday 30, Barca were leaders and ended up being champions. A ProFootballDB study lets us analyse it.
Both were on 77 points and RM's goal difference was better by one goal (+57 to +56). Barca had won the first 'Clasico' 1-0 and the second one was still to be played. The Catalans ended up winning.
To find another such a tight season at this stage, you have to go back to the 2001-02 campaign or the current season. 18 years ago, the fight was between Real Madrid and Valencia. Both had 53 points and the goal difference was +25 to +12 in Madrid's favour. The head to head was even (both 1-0) and Valencia won the league.
In the current season, the league is even tighter than 10 or 18 years ago. Real Madrid are the new leaders. Both have 65 points and a goal difference of +36, but RM have the better head to head record.
It is also worth looking at the 2016-17 season. There were just three points between both teams, but Real Madrid had a game in hand. Another example was in 2015-16. Barca had a nine point lead over Atletico and Barca won the league easily. In fact, Atletico were overtaken by Real Madrid.
Other very tight leagues
In 2013-14, 2003-04 and 2002-03, there was just point between the top two and none of them involved both Real Madrid and Barca.
In 2013-14, it was Atletico (73 points and +46) versus Barca (72 points and +63). The head to head was equal (2 draws) and Atletico won the league.
In 2003-04, it was Real Madrid (64 points and +27) against Valencia (63 points and +39). Valencia had the better head to head (1 win and 1 draw) and won the league.
Finally, in 2002-03, Real Madrid (61 points and +35) battled with Deportivo (60 points and +19). Real Madrid had the better head to head (1 win and 1 draw) and won the league.
