Called 'Panama Papers', it is an investigation being conducted, which news outlets such as the BBC and The Guardian have revealed involve many celebrities, including the President of Argentina Mauricio Macri, the King of Saudi Arabia, the Prime Minister of Iceland, the President of Ukraine Petro Poroschenko, Michel Platini and Lionel Messi, who all possess offshore companies in tax havens.
With regards to the Argentine and Barca star, 'El Confidencial' reveals Messi suspiciously acquired a new company in Panama, Mega Star Enterprises, just a day after the Spanish authorities unwrapped his tax offenses.
As noted by the same newspaper, the company is still active and, through it, Messi and his father followed the same pattern of the usual laundering networks. The company had been acquired by the Uruguayan Abreu, Abreu & Ferres on 13 June and the agency itself placed figureheads with intent to use it to hide assets or capital of its clients, in this case the Argentine Leo Messi.
According to internal documents between Abreu, Abreu & Ferres and Mossack Fonseca, Messi and his father are the ones who really own Mega Star Enterprises Inc.
This could land the Barca star in a lot of trouble if the investigation continues and finds him guilty.
