René Meulensteen, who was Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant at Manchester United, left some surprising declarations in the podcast 'The Michael Anthony Show'. The Dutchman compared United player Jesse Lingard to Andrés Iniesta.
"Jesse always had attributes in his game like Iniesta had at Barcelona", he confessed, who recalled that the player's career has been slowed down by the many loans he has experienced throughout his career.
Meulensteen is also clear who the architect of Lingard's big break was. "Louis van Gaal was the manager of the moment and he had a great talent for attracting young players. Jesse had the chance to play in the first team, although he wasn't the only one. Marcus Rashford, for example, also did it", he affirmed.
It isn't the first time that the Dutchman compared both players to each other. In another interview given in 2018, he went further: "I saw many similarities in the way he plays. I always thought Jesse was the English Andrés Iniesta. You could take Jesse to Barcelona and let him play in Iniesta's position. He would fit right in".
