UEFA has already chosen the referee for the match between Liverpool and Real Madrid. At Anfield, the match will be refereed by Istvan Kovacs, who was in charge of 'Los Blancos' against City in the previous edition. That match ended 4-3 in favour of the English team.

Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs will referee the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie between Liverpool and Real Madrid at Anfield on Tuesday.

Kovacs will be assisted on the sidelines by his compatriots Vasile Florin Marinescu and Ovidiu Artene, while the fourth official will be Horatiu Fesnic, also from Romania. Italy's Massimiliano Irrati and Marco Guida will be in charge of the VAR.

The Romanian referee already refereed Real Madrid in the Champions League last season in their visit to Manchester City, on 26th April 2022, with the final result 4-3 for the English side.

In the current campaign, Kovacs has refereed Dinamo Zagreb-Chelsea (1-0), Brugge-Atletico Madrid (2-0) and Bayer Leverkusen-Oporto (0-3).
