The internet never forgets, and Jurgen Klopp won't be the last to find that out the hard way. Following the announcement in a press conference that Liverpool have agreed to sign Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo, the German manager has seen his own words from 2016 thrown back at him.
The Reds have reportedly agreed a record transfer of €140 million (£110m) for Caicedo, an all-time high in the Premier League, and smashing Liverpool's previous club record of €86.65 million (£73m) for Virgil van Dijk.
After Klopp confirmed the deal on Friday, he has seen a statement he made from seven years ago resurface, after he made a dig at Manchester United signing midfielder Paul Pogba for €115 million (£100m).
"If you bring one player in for £100m and he gets injured, then it all goes through the chimney," declared Klopp in 2016. "The day that this is football, I'm not in a job anymore, because the game is about playing together"
"You always want to have the best, but building the group is necessary to be successful", he continued. "I want to do it differently. I would even do it differently if I could spend that money...If I spend money, it is because I am trying to build a team, a real team. Barcelona did it. You can win championships, you can win titles, but there is a manner in which you want it".
On Friday, the German acknowledged: "Honestly, everything has changed. Do I like it? No. But did I realise I was wrong? Yes, definitely. That’s the way it goes".
