The former president claimed to be in the Dominican Republic for work purposes.

The former president, who is in the Dominican Republic, has been investigated and his house has been registered by the UCO as part of an investigation into alleged irregular contracts in the Spanish Federation.

Telecinco journalist Isabel Rabago, on the programme 'Vamos a Ver', was able to obtain the former president's first words: "I am absolutely surprised by all this. I have been working here in the Dominican Republic for months. I've been here for more than a month straight. And in fact, my family was going to come and spend Easter with me".

Rubiales also assured that he was not fleeing from justice in that country: "I have not gone to avoid any kind of police or judicial action. I have been working in the Dominican Republic for a month now".

As several media outlets, including Cadena SER, have reported, Rubiales would have been arrested if he had been in Spain. For the moment, two people have been arrested: Tomas Gonzalez Cueto, who was an external advisor to the organisation, and Pedro Manuel Segura, in his capacity as director of legal advice at the time and current head of human resources for the federation.
