How the last five Madrid-Liverpool encounters ended

Madrid and Liverpool have only met on five occasions since their first meeting in the 1980-81 season. What might come as a surprise to some is that the 'Reds' edge the head-to-head with three wins (two losses).
Liverpool 1-0 Madrid (1980-81)
One of the most painful matches in 'Los Blancos' history. A golden opportunity to secure their seventh European crown was left in ruins by a goal from Alan Kennedy in the 82nd minute in the only final played between the two historic clubs before Saturday's match in Kiev.
Instead, Madrid had to wait 15 years to achieve the feat, failing to reach a single other final in the process until 1998.
Madrid 0-1 Liverpool (2008-09)
This Champions League quarter-final first leg also ended in the 'Reds' favour. After an even match, Liverpool struck the devastating blow through Yossi Benayoun in the 83rd minute, securing an important away goal in the process.
Liverpool 4-0 Madrid (2008-09)
The 'Reds' wrapped up the tie two weeks later with a stunning second-leg display. A brace from Steven Gerrard was joined by goals from Fernando Torres and Andrea Dossena as Liverpool ran out 4-0 winners at Anfield to secure their progression to the semi-final stage with an aggregate score of 5-0.
Liverpool 0-3 Madrid (2014-15)
'Los Blancos' returned the favour six years later, turning the tide in the process. Carlo Ancelotti's side comfortably swept Liverpool aside in their first group-stage match.
Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring before a double from Karim Benzema finished off their opposition in the first half.
Madrid 1-0 Liverpool (2014-15)
The second group-stage game was a lot closer though given Liverpool's desire to give a better showing at the Bernabeu. However, their efforts would be thrawted by a solitary goal by Karim Benzema.
