A full-strength Bayern side packed with talent suggested how seriously the Germans take the Supercup, with Robert Lewandowski & Co. playing their first competitive game of the season. Kovac and his opposite number, Frankfurt boss Adi Hutter, labelled the match as "important"; both sides met in May as an Ante Rebic-inspired 'Eagles' side defeated "Die Roten" 3-1 in the German Cup Final.
The rivalry seemed to spur on an exciting opening to the game, with both sides seeing a lot of the ball. Frankfurt came close from a free-kick but Abraham could not get his header on target, while Bayern saw several half-chances come the way of Lewandowski, but the Pole struggled to connect with the ball.
This soon changed as Lewandowski headed the visitors in front in the 21st minute. A delightfully-floated cross from Arjen Robben found Lewandowski in space at the far post, who headed down and past Rönnow in the Frankfurt goal. Just four minutes later, the lone striker doubled Bayern's lead with another header, as Rönnow failed to collect the ball from an inswinging corner and Lewandowski finished into an empty net.
Frankfurt struggled to get back into the game after the goal, and only nine minutes into the second-half, Lewandowski made it three and an impressive hat-trick as he turned the Frankfurt defence and finished underneath Rönnow. The game looked over for Frankfurt.
The embarrassment was furthered when Alaba forced a low cross into the area which cleared all except Kingsley Coman, who slotted home into an empty net. Thiago then ended the scoring in the 85th minute after Coman got in behind the Frankfurt defence following some impressive trickery, and squared for the Spaniard to tuck home.
Frankfurt were glad to hear the final whistle to bring the thrashing to an end, while Bayern came away with their third Supercup in as many years.
