Fenerbahce fined 115,000 euros for abandoning Super Cup final

Fenerbahce will have to pay a fine of around 115,000 euros for abandoning last Sunday's Super Cup final against Galatasaray after just two minutes of play, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) announced on Thursday.

In addition, the match will be counted as a 3-0 win for Galatasaray and a fine of 15,000 euros will also be imposed on Ahmet Ketenci, a member of the Fenerbahce board of directors, for making "gestures contrary to the spirit of sport" when he withdrew the team from the pitch.

Fenerbahçe have been complaining for months about what they perceive as antipathy from the federation and referees towards the club and in protest did not send the first team to the Super Cup, but the U19 players.

In the first minute, Galatasaray's Argentinian striker Mauro Icardi scored a goal and immediately afterwards Fenerbahce ordered their players to leave. But the TFF has also imposed two fines totalling 6,000 euros on Galatasaray for the attitude of their fans during the brief match. Galatasaray currently lead the Turkish Super League competition, 2 points ahead of Fenerbahce.

The Turkish Super Cup for the 2022-23 season was originally scheduled to be played on 29th December in the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh, but was called off at the last minute when the Saudi Arabian authorities prevented Turkish players from wearing shirts bearing the effigy of Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, in the warm-up. It was finally set for Sunday at the stadium in the southern Turkish city of Sanliurfa.
