Manchester United and Real Sociedad played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Europa League last 16 tie, with Joshua Zirkzee's opener cancelled out by Mikel Oyarzabal's penalty.

Manchester United and Real Sociedad remain level after a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie at the Reale Arena.

Joshua Zirkzee gave the Red Devils the lead in the 57th minute with an accurate shot from the edge of the box after an excellent assist from Alejandro Garnacho.

However, the home side equalised in the 69th minute when Mikel Oyarzabal converted a penalty after Bruno Fernandes was penalised for handball following a VAR review.

In the closing stages of the game the Spanish side pushed for the winner, with Oskarsson going close on several occasions but to no avail.

United was able to handle the pressure even though they were missing important players like Manuel Ugarte and Harry Maguire due to injury.

The second leg will be played on 13 March at Old Trafford, where both teams will be looking to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

With everything still to play for, the tie promises another thrilling encounter as Manchester United look to keep their European hopes alive in the midst of a difficult domestic season.
