Where is Alexis Sanchez?

Despite being the highest-paid player in the Premier League, Manchester United's Alexis Sanchez has disappointed in his first ten games at Old Trafford and looks a shell of the footballer he was a few seasons ago.

United fell spectacularly short in their Champions League last-16 clash with Sevilla as Wissam Ben Yedder scored twice in four minutes to snatch their dreams of European glory from right under their noses.

Overall, it was a lacklustre performance from a team who, days earlier, had managed to cling on to an important victory over rivals Liverpool in the Premier League. However, out of them all, one player stood out and not for a good reason.

Instead of rising to the occasion like a former Barcelona and Arsenal player should, Sanchez appeared lost in Jose Mourinho's negative tactical plan and largely disappeared for United's season-defining game.

Throughout the 90 minutes, the Chile international conceded possession 42 times, the most for an individual player in the Champions League this season, creating a worrying aspect of his game.

The number follows similar displays against Crystal Palace, Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town in which he lost the ball between 34 to 36 times, which is almost justifiable when you are scoring consistently but Sanchez has found the back of the net just once - a follow-up from a saved penalty - since moving to Old Trafford in January.

In addition, he isn't providing assists either. Against Sevilla, a clever one-two with Marouane Fellaini in the 38th minute, which resulted in the Belgian shooting at the near post, was all that the forward offered, despite Mourinho playing him in his preferred position on the left.

The Portuguese head coach has come out in defence of his January signing, urging fans to wait until next season when Sanchez is settled. However, with just the FA Cup to play for now, Mourinho nor United cannot afford to wait for the Chilean to find his most deadly form.
