Real Madrid took the lead against Shakhtar Donetsk inside the first 15 minutes of the Champions League group stage match. They did so after the Ukrainians made a mess of trying to play out from the back and Vinicius intercepted the ball before passing to Karim Benzema.

Vinicius and Karim Benzema were the ones who helped put Real Madrid in the league in their Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk. The Brazilian won the ball up top when the away side made a mistake when they tried to play the ball out from the back and the Frenchman opened the scoring. Just before that, Shakhtar had struck the post.

The goal was key for Carlo Ancelotti's men because they were better than their opponents although the away side had looked dangerous on several occasions. Before Madrid made it 1-0, Courtois had had to intervene on the odd occasion.

Ancelotti, in fact, was delighted on the Madrid bench when his team took the lead. Just before the start of the game, the Italian said that getting the three points was crucial and that explains his reaction to Benzema beating keeper Trubin.

This goal was also Real Madrid's 1000th in Champions League history. The landmark is a great achievement and shows how good 'Los Blancos' have been in this competition. They have won it more times than anyone else and they tend to perform well even when they are playing badly.
