Controversy enveloped the Bernabeu once again as a well-struck Modric volley appeared to have given Real Madrid the lead against Celta Vigo, only for the goal to be ruled out by an intervention from VAR.

VAR was the protagonist once again as Real Madrid took to the Bernabeu pitch for Zinedine Zidane's first match since returning as manager. The video referee had earlier denied Marco Asensio a penalty, adjudging that the Spaniard had been fouled outside the area rather than in, and was the centre of attention once again in the 56th minute.

Modric, lurking on the edge of the area, hit a well-timed volley towards goal, with the ball evading the crowd of players in front of him to nestle in the Celta net. But VAR disallowed the goal due to Rapahel Varane being in an offside position when the ball was struck, adjudging that he had interfered with play.
