Valencia host Arsenal this Thursday with the obligation of coming back from 3-1 down in the first leg of the Europa League semi-final. They have never managed to fight back after losing 3-1 in the first leg, but they have managed to qualify after losing 3-0.

It was the quarter-finals of the 2013-14 Europa League against Basle against which Valencia lost the first leg 3-0.

In the return leg at the Mestalla on 10th April 2014, Valencia managed to force extra-time with two goals from Paco Alcacer and Vargas in the first half and another goal by Alcacer in the 70th minute.

In extra-time, Paco Alcacer in the 112th minute and Juan Bernat in the 116th, sent the Spanish side through to the semi-finals, who that day went out with Guaita, Joao Pereira (Piatti, m,109), Javi Fuego, Mathieu (Ricardo Costa, m.82), Bernat, Parejo, Keita, Feghouli, Vargas, Fede Cartabia (Jonas, m.76) and Paco Alcácer.

However, the Valencians have never fought back from a 3-1 loss in the first leg in European competition. Before last week's first leg at the Emirates, Valencia had suffered this same result on three occasions

In the 1972-73 UEFA Cup against Red Star Belgrade, then in the Cup Winners' Cup in 1980-81 against Karl Zeiss Jena from the GDR and finally, in the 1989-90 UEFA Cup versus Porto

Against Red Star, Valencia lost again at home (0-1) while in the other two they won, but it was not enough to see them through. A 1-0 win over the Germans and 3-2 victory against the Portuguese outfit.
