In a week that saw Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso banned for raking his studs down the leg of an opponent, you would have thought that other players would have taken it as a warning as to what is not acceptable, but Kieran Trippier, seemingly, did not.

Alonso was issued with a three-match ban for his challenge on Southampton's Shane Long, meaning that he will miss his side's FA Cup semi-final on Sunday.

With Manchester United and Tottenham facing off in a semi-final of their own on Saturday, onlookers witnessed a copycat challenge from Trippier.

With just three minutes on the clock, the right-back could be seen raking his studs down the back of the leg of Alexis Sanchez.

It was a disgusting challenge that was quickly criticised on social media.

However, the on-field referee failed to witness the incident, opening up for the potential of retrospective action.
