Tottenham have expressed an interest in signing Hoffenheim full-back Jeremy Toljan after talks with Porto over a deal for Ricardo Pereira fell through.

The interest comes after talks between Spurs and Porto broke down over a deal for Ricardo Pereira. It is understood Porto's £20million valuation of the player proved to be a major stumbling block in the negotiations.

Toljan, who represented Germany at the 2016 Olympic Games and at the European Under 21's Championships this summer, can play on both the right and left side of defence. Spurs see the young German as a player who can put pressure on first choice full-backs Danny Rose and Kieran Trippier.

Tottenham intend to take advantage of the fact the Toljan has one year left on his contract with Hoffenheim. It is understood that the North London club could sign the German for as little as £3m.

Hoffenheim's director of football Alex Rosen recently told Bild: 'If Tottenham comes and offers to triple your salary, then you can't say too many negative things: London is an unattractive city or Tottenham a bad club. This is all very positive – and then young people think about it.'
