The decision to expand the tournament was made on March 15 in Miami, and meant that 24 clubs would participate in the tournament every four years. In this new format, the competition would involve the winners of the Champions League and Europa League from the previous four years, as well as six other teams from South America and three each from Africa, Asia and CONCACAF.
Offers are already being put on the table for the rights to host the first tournament, which will be held in 2021. Tokyo appears ready to throw everything it has at trying to win the rights, and are prepared to offer £1 billion to host the event. Reports are also emerging that Fifa president Gianni Infantino had an agreement in place with 'SoftBank', a Japanese bank that could invest £2 billion into FIFA competitions.
