The season has barely begun, but the Argentine has the chance to make more history before next week's La Liga opener.

By are reminded today by 'Marca' that, to date, the player who has featured in the most victories over arch-rivals Real Madrid is Xavi Hernandez: 17 wins in 42 appearances.

Messi could surpass his former teammate. It will however, not be easy. To do so, Barcelona will have to win both legs of the Spanish Super Cup against last season's La Liga and Champions League winners.

Messi would also better Xavi's win percentage: the Argentine has the opportunity to win as many games after 36 'Clasicos' against Real Madrid. That is, six fewer than the midfielder.

Will Messi make it? The road to victory begins on Sunday and we will have our answer on Wednesday. Messi will do everything to reach this particular landmark, while getting his team's season started by lifting a trophy.
