The problems Mourinho must address this summer

An FA Cup final defeat on Saturday meant Manchester United's season ended trophy-less, leaving manager Jose Mourinho stuck back at square one.

United secured their best Premier League haul since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013, finishing in second with 81 points - but still 19 off eventual champions Manchester City.

However, their other silverware opportunities ended in disappointment. Bristol City knocked them out of the League Cup at the quarter-final stage whilst Sevilla dished out a humiliating exit from the Champions League a round earlier.

It left just the FA Cup to salvage their season but a 1-0 defeat to Chelsea at Wembley at the weekend ended that hope too, raising numerous issues which Mourinho must address during the summer.

The biggest one is how to get the best out of underachieving superstars Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba. Both have had the rare Man-of-the-Match performance but largely they have failed to hit the ground running, instead being sloppy in possession and failing to create the chances necessary for the attack.

For Sanchez, a full preseason at Old Trafford could solve his form problem but Pogba's case is a little more complicated given he has been at the club for two years.  Mourinho may have to lift the shackles if he wants the best from his two supposed "superstars".

Staying with the attack, what should Mourinho do with Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford, who have also experienced poor displays this season? Although the majority of their appearances have been from the bench after falling down the pecking order.

Martial looks to be on his way out of Manchester but at the age of just 20, Rashford has too much talent to let go. The question arises as to whether Mourinho can get the best out of the England international, or whether a season-long loan spell will be better for his development.

Providing United can get their attack firing on all cylinders, their final piece of the puzzle could be finding a leader on the pitch.

Players such as Eric Cantona, Bryan Robson and Roy Keane are synonymous with physical United sides of the past. But with Michael Carrick retiring at the end of the season, the 'Red Devils' need someone who can lead by example when matches start becoming difficult.

If Mourinho can address these principle issues during the summer, United could find themselves closer to the Premier League title battle next season.
