Sunderland forward Duncan Watmore has been given a surprise boost as he continues his recovery from a serious knee injury after receiving a letter of support from European champions Real Madrid.

Watmore suffered a devastating blow last month as he tore his anterior cruciate ligament during the Black Cats' home draw against Millwall in the Championship.

As if that weren't enough, the game was only Watmore's sixth since returning from eight months out from another cruciate ligament injury in the same knee.

Clearly aware of the news, Real were quick to sent a message of support to the 22-year-old.

The kind gesture was revealed by Duncan's dad Ian on Twitter, who wrote: 'Duncan went to rehab today to find this letter waiting for him. How classy is that from @RealMadrid?

'I now hope they win the Champions League again!'

The letter read: 'Dear Duncan. On behalf of our president, Florentino Perez, and those who work for Real Madrid, we would like to wish you a smooth and speedy recovery from your knee injury.

'Warm regards, Emilio Butragueno, director of institutional relations'.
