Sunderland manager Simon Grayson, who signed Max Gradel during his time at Leeds, is upset that his club missed out on the signing.

The Black Cats were trying to bring the Ivorian in from Bournemouth, but in the end he decided to make a move to French Ligue 1 side Toulouse.

In 2009, Grayson signed the 29-year-old for Leeds, and he had hoped to bring him again to his Sunderland side during this window.

'That would have been a big signing for us if we had managed to do it, but he just felt his family wanted to go back to France and that was a disappointment for us, but that is part and parcel of the transfer window. We spoke to Max and he eventually decided to go back to France', Grayson said.

It is not the first time that the Ivorian forward has played in France, as he played for Saint-Etienne scoring 31 goals in 115 games over a period of 4 years.
