Stoke chief executive Tony Scholes has spoken out about the club's supposed interest in Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney

In an interview with 'BBC Sport' Scholes admitted that Rooney "has been and still is a great footballer" and even went as far as to say that he "has been one of the best of his generation", but stressed that the striker will not ba joining Stoke this summer and that no discussions of any kind have taken place.

Stoke had been heavily linked with a move for the England international and a series of bets ad seen the odds on him making a move to the potteries tumble dramatically but Scholes insists that "there's been no conversations whatsoever about Wayne Rooney coming to Stoke".

He did admit though that 'the potters' were hoping to extend former Manchester United man Ryan Shawcross' contract "sooner rather than later" and that the club were hoping to push through a deal for Bruno Martins Indi, who was an ever present for Mark Hughes' side last season since signing on loan from Porto.
