Olhanense player Edson Pires reported to the ref that a player from the other team had called him a "s*** black". The man in the middle said that he would listen out for it and, after that, he showed two yellows meaning he was sent off. The player went off in tears and had to be consoled by his teammates.

An Olhanense player, in the Portuguese fourth division, was sent off after reporting he had been victim to racism from a player from the opposite side during the match.

Midfielder Edson Pires went to talk to the ref after Diogo Andrade of Rabo Piexe supposedly uttered a racist insult during the first half, to which the referee just said he would listen out for.

The player re-explained the situation, which is why the referee gave him his first yellow, followed by another and then a red. "Our player went to the referee to report that an opposition player had called him a "s*** black", and he saw yellow, which naturally left him gobsmacked. He then received a second yellow and then the red, which is something baffling and incomprehensible", SAD do Olhanense manager Luis Torres said.

Edson left the pitch in tears and consoled by his teammates, and the game, which was won by Rabo de Peixe by 0-2, was halted for seven minutes, according to Portuguese paper 'Record'.

Luis Torres, SAD do Olhanense coach, said to the local press that it was something "baffling and incomprehensible", and announced that they will go ahead with an appeal to the Portuguese Football Federation.
