Rummenigge condemns Bayern supporters after violent Schalke attack
The club CEO condemned a section of fans who "violently" attacked Schalke supporters ahead of the match in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday
Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has criticised a section of the club's fans who attacked Schalke supporters in violent clashes in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday.
The supporters clashed before the Bavarian side's 3-1 win in the Veltins Arena, with police describing the incident as an "extremely violent attack".
The chief executive reacted swiftly, distancing the club from those who were involved.
"Violence cannot and should never be tolerated," he said in a club statement.
"I expected fans of FC Bayern to behave appropriately and sensitively. Almost all have done that, but unfortunately not all, and I am very disappointed."
Rummenigge went on to apologise to Schalke and to those who suffered injuries in the attack, and added: "Local police responded well considering the difficult situation of escalating violence."
Bayern's win sees them extend their lead at the Bundesliga summit to eight points, with David Alaba, Javi Martinez and Thomas Muller on target for Pep Guardiola's men.
