Aside from debating which of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi is the bigger star, the pair are undoubtedly the defining duo of modern football, with the competition between them of simply epic proportions.

Now tied on four Champions Leagues and five Ballon d'Ors apiece, the pair have come to define a generation, sweeping away the competition to dominate every aspect of the last 10 years of football.

Although the pair insist that they are not in direct competition, they have on occasion let slip that they use each other as almost a friendly rivalry in order to continue to push themselves to be the best they can be, knowing that whichever of them is on top, the other will be breathing down their neck eager to regain the spotlight.

With little time remaining until the end of 2017, the two will face-off once again as they look to claim the title of 2017's top goalscorer.

Messi currently has 53 goals for club and country this calendar year, whilst Ronaldo is just behind on 52.

With just two games to go before the winter break, the battle adds an interesting sub-plot to the fixtures, particularly when you consider that the final game before Christmas will see Messi and Ronaldo face off at the Bernabeu in the first league 'Clásico' of the season.

The titanic duel will no doubt continue for a few years yet, but there are already a number of records that go to highlight just how close the battle between them is.

The Portuguese is currently the all-time top scorer in the Champions League (114), whilst Messi holds that honour in La Liga (362).

The Argentine has won more titles at club level (30), but Ronaldo is the record scorer in the Club World Cup (6).

The Real Madrid man has scored more goals in European competitions than anyone else (117), but the Barca star has the record for goals scored in a calendar year (90).

Finally, Ronaldo has scored 79 goals for his national side, whilst Messi has found the net 61 times for Argentina.
