Bayern Munich midifelder James Rodriguez faced off against his parent club on Wednesday evening and proved his is more than just a Real Madrid reject.

The scoreline didn't reflect Bayern Munich's dominance at the Allianz Arena. Madrid were lucky to come away from the first leg with two important away goals and a one-goal advantage after capitalising on two errors from the Bavarian club.

However, taking that away and Bayern had numerous chances to put the tie comfortably out of reach and a lot of that praise can be put down to Rodriguez's creative streak

Having fallen down the pecking order at Madrid, despite wowing at the 2014 World Cup, Rodriguez was shipped off to the Bundesliga on a two-year loan and has experienced a revival in Germany.

Wednesday night was no expection. The Colombian midfielder was free to roam the flanks and central positions after Arjen Robben's removal early on, even dropping deep to gain possession from his parent club.

It was this freedom which saw Rodriguez tee up teammate Joshua Kimmich for the opener and Bayern's only goal of the game, bringing up his 12th assist for the season.

That figure could have risen if Thomas Muller had headed James' inswinging corner into the back of the net or if Lewandowksi had scored one of his opportunities.

One thing remains clear though, given his resurgence in Germany, it seems unlikely that the Colombia international will ever consider going back to Madrid.
