Chelsea announced on social media that England full-back Reece James will be the Blues' new captain effective from the start of the new season.
Chelsea have a new leader both on and off the pitch. Reece James has been named captain of the Blues, the London club announced on their official website.
"Reece James has officially been confirmed as Chelsea Football Club’s new captain. A boyhood Blues supporter who joined our Academy at six years old, Reece was the club’s standout choice to lead us on and off the pitch this season," reads the statement.
The England international made it clear what this new role means to him: "I'm so happy to take on the role and responsibility. I know I've got big shoes to fill because we have had huge captains here in the past, but I am excited.
"I have been at Chelsea pretty much my whole life. I started here when I was six and to come through the Academy is tough. But to go on and become captain, it's a great feeling for me and my family," said James.
Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino was also pleased with the choice made regarding the new captain: "This is a decision taken by me and the club. We are very pleased Reece will captain the side this season.
