After Atletico Madrid's elimination at the hands of Chelsea, UEFA have updated their rankings and the Premier League is once again top after going above La Liga. Italy are still in third ahead of Germany.
Bad results for Spanish teams in the 2020-21 season have led to the Premier League taking top spot from La Liga in the latest update to the UEFA coefficient rankings.
It is as a consequence of Atletico Madrid elimination at the hands of Chelsea in the Champions League last 16. That means Real Madrid are the only Spanish side in the last eight of the competition.
As of 18th March, England has a coefficient of 18.928 points in 2020-21 ahead of Spain's 16.785 points. The average over the last five seasons sees the Premier League on top despite it being 95.140 points each.
La Liga had been the best in the world according to UEFA. Last summer they remained top thanks to Sevilla winning the Europa League. However, no Spanish side made the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2007.
The situation will be difficult to turn around because there are six English sides left in Europe (three in the Champions League and three in the Europa League). Spain just has Real Madrid in the Champions League and Granada and Villarreal in the Europa League.
