Following the sacking of Steven Gerrard on Thursday, Aston Villa are close to signing Mauricio Pochettino as a replacement for the former Villa boss. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Argentine will wait until after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to take charge of a new team.

After six months of rest, Mauricio Pochettino could return to lead a team in the Premier League. The Argentinian's move to Aston Villa is even closer, but it will not be immediate.

The former Paris Saint-Germain boss is without a team. Steven Gerrard's sacking because of the Birmingham club's poor results precipitated an exhaustive search for a new manager.

Despite the names that have been linked with the Villains, the coach preferred to wait for an offer that best suits his ambitions. However, he is yet to make a firm decision.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Pochettino's express wish is to wait until after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, as he will be waiting for the dismissal of one of the national coaches.

This suggests that the former Tottenham man's priority is to lead a national team, rather than take charge of the Birmingham side, who now sit sixteenth in the English Premier League, one point above the relegation zone.
