England's emphatic 2-3 victory away at Real Betis' Estadio Benito Villamarín could have been very different if the referee had awarded a penalty after Jordan Pickford jostled with Rodrigo Moreno in his penalty area. The 'Three Lions' won in Spain for the first time since 1987.

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford admits that he "got away with one", after his attempted Cruyff-turn backfired.

The Everton goalkeeper confidently tried to execute a Cruyff-turn after an initial poor touch, however the 'Three Lions' goalkeeper managed to get the ball trapped in his feet.

Valencia CF striker Rodrigo managed to disposes the 24-year-old and had a clear sight on goal, however Pickford recovered well to clear the ball away.

Despite the quick recovery, replays clearly show Pickford pulling Rodrigo and potentially upending him in the penalty area, which caused uproar on the Spanish bench as Luis Enrique and co clearly felt that the referee got it wrong.

In his post-match interview with 'Sky Sports' Pickford accepted that he had "got away with one" as the referee awarded a corner, rather than a penalty.

"Firstly, I tried to play through the middle but he blocked the pass off.

"It got stuck under my feet so I tried to do the good old Cruyff and it didn’t work.

"I had that never say die attitude and there might have been a little nudge. But  if you look back I got an elbow right in my dish and I got a good clearance.

"Some people will say I got away with one and part of the game. I've got people on the edge of their seats. I don't wish to do that but it’s a decision I made and the main thing is it didn’t go in the back of the net."

"It’s not up to me to say the ref gives a penalty but I think it’s a bit soft because he didn’t go down for it."

Spanish journalist Guillem Balagué told 'BBC Five Live' that it was a "clear penalty" and Spanish publication 'AS' ran a cover featuring the incident, highlighting the injustice involved.

'Sky Sports' pundits Jamie Carragher and Jamie Redknapp also believe that the referee should have awarded a penalty.

"It’s a penalty and it would have been a sending off," Redknapp said in his post-match analysis.

"He’s a very lucky boy. Especially when you have the assistant behind the goal. I cannot believe he missed it.

"You need that bit of luck some times but he has been a revelation since he came into the side", he said.

Jamie Carragher described the incident as "silly"

"It was a bit silly," Carragher said. "He's looking for a pass and he just gets his feet mixed up.

"Some may say that's the price you have to pay with the goalkeeper when you want to play out from the back but I don't agree.

"Just because you want to play out from the back, doesn't mean your goalkeeper should take that long on the ball.

"He has to sort his feet out quicker. I think he is actually looking for a pass and (Harry) Maguire and (Ben) Chilwell aren't really there. But this is a penalty, he pulls him back", he added.
