No lack of strikers for England

Jermain Defoe scored for England on his return.

England hosted Lithuania who came out at Wembley decided to sit back and defend deep. The home side wanted to continue their splendid run in qualifying matches.

It was a slow start to the game, with no urgency from either side. Lithuania were content sitting back and waiting for England, who had to adjust to their opponent's defensive stance.

Dele Alli and Sterling were lively in the first half, with the latter providing the assist for Jermaine Defoe to side-foot the ball into the net. The 34-year-old became the sixth oldest scorer for the Three Lions.

The second half had more rhythm in its early stages, which was worrying for the home side, as this allowed Lithuania to create some danger for Hart.

Southgate took Sterling and Defoe off, to bring on Rashford and Vardy, and it was the Leicester striker who calmed the nerves of the crowd at Wembley, with his goal after a lovely move involving Walker and Lallana.

A very different England was seen today, with patient passing of the ball and composed build up play, which seems to be Southgate's plan for England. The game was sluggish at times and most chances came once Lithuania had given up hope, but it got the job done and England took the three points.

Lithuania remain fourth, but Scotland could go above them if they win tonight. England are still leaders and will also hope for a victory at Hampden Park which would see them go five points clear of Slovenia.
