Newcastle United have initiated negotiations with Southampton regarding the signing of England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, exploring options for both loan and permanent transfer. Southampton, who acquired Ramsdale from Arsenal last summer, favour a substantial permanent deal.
Newcastle United has begun formal talks with Southampton to sign goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, according to Sky Sports. The St James' Park club is looking to strengthen its goalkeeping options and is considering the possibility of signing the England international on loan or on a permanent transfer.
However, Southampton, which signed Ramsdale from Arsenal in August 2024 for a fee of around £18-25 million, is clearly hoping for a permanent sale on favourable financial terms. Negotiations are still in the early stages and no concrete agreement has been reached between the two clubs at this time.
Ramsdale played 30 Premier League games last season, although his team finished bottom of the table and was relegated to the Championship. Newcastle's interest comes after losing James Trafford, who finally returned to Manchester City after Pep Guardiola's club activated a clause in his contract.
If the transfer goes through, Ramsdale would compete for the starting spot with Nick Pope, the Magpies' current goalkeeper. The signing would also mean a professional reunion with Eddie Howe, the coach who previously managed Ramsdale during his time at Bournemouth.
