Atlanta United FC played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with Orlando City SC in front of front of a Major League Soccer (MLS) single-game attendance record crowd on Saturday at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Atlanta attracted no fewer than 70,425 people to their new £1.1billion Mercedes-Benz Stadium to watch the six-goal epic.

MLS record signing Dom Dwyer scored his first two MLS goals as an Orlando City player as the visitors tooke the lead three times, only to be pegged back by a Josef Martinez hat-trick.

The attendance broke the previous MLS record set in 1996 when David Beckham's former side LA Galaxy attracted 69,225 people to the Rose Bowl.

Though an MLS record, the attendance did not quite reach the 77,000 mark that was met by the New York Cosmas for a North American Soccer League play-off game at Giants Stadium in 1977.

Nevertheless, MLS commissioner Don Garber was taken aback by the support.. 'It's incredible. I think it says that there are really no limits. We never really expected this to happen.'

The game features former European-based players Brad Guzan, Chris McCann, Tyrone Mears, Kenwyne Jones, Jonathan Spector, Scott Sutter, Antonio Nocerino, Josef Martinez and Giles Barnes.
