Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has come under scrutiny for the public treatment of his young players.

Mourinho has been accused of publicly shaming Luke Shaw. The United defender was substituted off at half-time during a win over Brighton in the FA Cup for supposedly neglecting his defensive duties.

The match marked Shaw's first start of the month and the United squad are said to be shocked at the treatment of the young defender. Shaw is expected to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, despite United having triggered his one year extension clause until 2019.

The United coach's 'bullying' attitude has been privately questioned by his players. Last season, Mourinho made a point of calling out the 'lack of courage and bravery' of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones after they were injured and unable to continue.

Mourinho said of Shaw's performance on Saturday that he was substituted off because ''at least Antonio [Valencia ]defensively was capable of good positioning. Luke, in the first half, every time they came in his corridor, the cross came in and dangerous situation was coming.'' He added that he ''was not happy with his performance.''
