You would have been forgiven for thinking that United's recent form would have been enough to please Jose Mourinho, but you would have been wrong, with the Portuguese slipping in a sly dig at the United fans ahead of their game against Everton.

United swept Ronald Koeman's side away thanks to goals from Antonio Valencia, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial but Mourinho still managed to upset some fans with comments made in United's progamme.

Seemingly upset by the noise levels during recent home games against Leicester and Basel, the Portuguese called on the United faithful to make more noise aginst Everton, saying: 'I do hope that our noisy supporters are back from their holidays for today's match to give the players the backing they need and deserve.

'I want the lads to enjoy a really supportive atmosphere in all our home games in every competition. We haven't lost at home for over a year, and if we can keep performing well – the players on the pitch, the fans in the stands – then I hope this run can continue for a lot longer.'

Mourinho's comments are unlikely to endear himself the the United fans but if he keeps winning games he is likely to be allowed to say what he likes.
