Manchester United beat Ajax in the Europa League final to lift their third trophy of the season and qualify for the Champions League. At a personal level, the title allows Mourinho to become the first manager in Europe to reach this particular milestone.

The Red Devils had never triumphed in the Europa League (previously known as the UEFA Cup), more accustomed to Champions League football under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Mourinho, however, had lifted the trophy, back in 2003 with Porto when it was still the UEFA Cup. The following year, he made history with the Portuguese club by winning their first Champions League, beating Monaco in the final.

He then became the third manager, the others being Carlo Ancelotti and Jupp Heynckes, to win the Champions League (previously European Cup) with two different clubs, after lifting the trophy with Inter Milan in 2010.

With his second Europa League (UEFA Cup), he joins Unai Emery and Giovanni Trapattoni as the only managers to win the competition with different teams.

But, having beaten Ajax 2-0 to win the Europa League again, Jose Mourinho becomes the only manager to win both major European trophies twice: UEFA Cup/Europa League (2003, 2017) and Champions League (2004, 2010).
