Team manager Christian Abbiati says Leonardo Bonucci has the 'personality and experience' to take over from Riccardo Montolivo as AC Milan captain.

Bonucci joined Milan in a surprise £35.2m switch from Juventus earlier this summer. The centre back is expected to make his competitive debut when the Italian side face Shkendija in the first leg of their Europa League play-off next week.

Abbiati recently told 'Mediaset television', 'this armband has a lot of significance and comes with a lot of responsibility.'

'Leo has got the right personality and experience to wear it. This is how the club have decided, they wanted to make one of the new arrivals captain.'

Bonucci had been tipped to become Juventus' new captain, but that role is now expected to be filled by Claudio Marchisio.
