Middlesbrough are interested in a move for former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, who has spent the past two years in China.

The Nigerian midfielder, 31, is thought to favour the move as it would allow him to move closer to his family. He is currently undergoing a medical at Middlesbrough, where he hopes he can help Tony Pulis' side push for promotion. The side are currently fifth in the Championship and looking to secure a frist-time return to the Premier League.

Mikel had also been of interest to other European clubs, including Roma, Wolfsburg and Crystal Palace. The midfielder, who has made 85 appearances and scored six goals for his native Nigeria, is hopeful of representing his country at this year's Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. He spent eleven years at Chelsea, where his highlight was undoubtedly winning the 2012 Champions League. He also won two Premier Leagues and three FA Cups during his time at Stamford Bridge.
