German international Mertesacker will retire at the end of the campaign, as he will become Arsenal's academy manager after putting an end to his playing career.

The German centre-half will end his playing career after the next campaign, as he wishes to become Arsenal's academy manager.

"Looking back it was a fairytale end to last season. Now I am trying to do everything I can to get better", he said.

The German international played a major role during the FA Cup final against Chelsea, and admitted he was surprised with his performance

Mertesacker has been at Arsenal for six years, and he is looking forward to continue that association with the club as academy manager.

"It gives me a lot of pride, It shows that the club believes in me, not only as a player but they also see me to develop young players, that's why I am very happy and priviledged to take over from next season," he said.
