Enzo Maresca, Chelsea manager, said that Cole Palmer had already been struggling with a groin injury in the build up to the Premier League game against West Ham.
Enzo Maresca revealed that Cole Palmer has been struggling with physical discomfort for several matches and had to be assessed after missing Chelsea's thrashing of West Ham.
The England international had been named in the starting line-up for the London Stadium derby, but stopped during the pre-match warm-up and was replaced by youngster Estevao. The coach later explained that the decision to withdraw him was made as a precaution to avoid a bigger problem.
"Cole, in the last four or five days, was not 100%. Today, he tried to warm up, but he felt something. So, we prefer not to take any risk of making it worse, and we'll see in the next few hours if it's something important or not," Maresca told the media.
The coach even admitted that the player was not in peak physical condition in the previous match against Crystal Palace. "Probably (for the) Palace game he was not 100%," he acknowledged in the press room.
