In the opening match of Group A, Manchester United host Basel on Tuesday night in their return to the Champions League after a one-year absence.

United return to Europe's elite club competition after missing out for just the second time in 22 years last season thanks to their Europa League triumph last season. Swiss champions FC Basel finished bottom of their group last year which contained Arsenal, Paris-Saint Germain but Mourinho will have to make sure his side do not take their visitors for granted.

The last time these two sides met was in 2011 at Old Trafford, where United required a late equaliser from Ashley Young to rescue a 3-3 draw.

Mourinho has already confirmed that Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling will start United's Champions League curtain-raiser. Meanwhile, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcos Rojo remain absent through knee injuries. Ashley Young, Luke Shaw both trained on the eve of the game, along with Marouane Fellaini who missed Saturday's draw at Stoke with a calf complaint. David De Gea will start in goal instead of Sergio Romero.

Potential lineups for Manchester United v Basel:

Manchester United: De Gea; Valencia, Lindelof, Smalling, Blind; Matic, Pogba, Herrera; Mata, Martial, Lukaku

Basel: Vaclik; Suchy, Lang, Akanji, Riveros; Die, Zuffi, Xhaka; Steffen, Bua, Van Wolfswinkel
