Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon says the club have no choice but to target Harry Kane if they want to stay at the summit of European football, reported 'The Sun'.

There have been widespread reports over the past few weeks that Real Madrid are interested in bringing the 24-year old England international to the Santiago Bernabeu after his outstanding goalscoring form in recent months.

After Tottenham came away from the Bernabeu with a point in the Champions League clash on Tuesday night, Caledron says the club have to be in the market for the Tottenham striker in order to maintian their status as one of the world's best.

The former club president said: "Now Madrid are always on the lookout for the top players.

"A club like Real Madrid is obliged to have important players so they can bring in new sponsors, brands and keep generating more money so they can maintain their current status.

"That money helps you to invest, save and invest again.

"I suppose Madrid would like to sign Kane, it depends on a few things, such as the desires of player and the coach, but without a doubt he is an outstanding player."

Despite the interest emanating from the Spanish capital, it is unlikely that Tottenham will let their prized asset go without a fight, and they reportedly value Kane at £200m, but Los Blancos want a deal worth £150m.

However, Calderon believes that with the way things are in football, an investment of that magnitude would not be seen as abnormal.

He added: "He would not be cheap, but when I signed Cristiano Ronaldo for 80 million everyone thought I was crazy and look where we are now.

"One hundred and fifty million is now seen as nothing, it's normal. We no longer know what the limit is."
