The latest leaks suggest that Real Madrid are keeping a close eye on Chelsea's Reece James, and a new report from 'Goal' warns that the Spaniards could go for him now ahead of the 2023 summer transfer window. At this point, the Real Madrid squad will be even more stretched in defence.

At the moment, Real Madrid appear to be well covered in defence. With the likely arrival of Rudiger, with David Alaba, Militao and Nacho in the squad, as well as Lucas Vazquez, Mendy and Carvajal, there is no urgency, at least so far, to bring in new full-backs. But this could change in the run-up to the 2023-24 season.

In recent weeks, there have been leaks warning that the Spanish club were on the trail of Reece James, who plays for Chelsea and has a contract until 2025. 'Goal' now adds that the tracking of the Blue could be due to a possible offer as early as next year's summer transfer window.

At that point, the situation of Carvajal and Lucas Vázquez may have changed, although, for example, the return of Alvaro Odriozola, who is on loan at Fiorentina, could mean that a new defender will be fighting for a place in the 23-24. It will all depend on his performance when he returns to Madrid.

This is where Reece James comes in. If Real Madrid feel the need to reinforce their full-backs, they may go for him; if not, it is more likely that they will be more cautious in their intentions and not take the gamble. At present, their investments are more in other players such as Kylian Mbappe.
